So this program wouldn't be all that bad. It's got a bunch of nice features. It's just got one minor drawback. Absolutely no structure. There's a bunch of words. It says them for you, shows you how their written including stroke order. But no structure you can scroll through the phrases section and click on a word to see and here the Chinese. Then you can record your voice and hear it played back (cool feature) it's even got a section devoted to sentence structures. But where do you start? You just go alphabetically through the pinyin starting at a and moving to zuo? Yeah that'll stick with you. Anyway the recommendation against still stands. In fact so far Clavis Sinica is the only program I've encountered for under a hundred bucks that's any good. Mind you I've never tried anything that's over a hundred so I don't know if there is anything good out there but CS rocks my socks. Only problem with CS is it isn't a learning course. It's a reading tool. You copy text out of an online newspaper or blog and paste it into CS. Then when you move your cursor (underline not the mouse cursor) around the document it displays the character you're on in the bottom of the window. No more having to go back and forth with the dictionary.
